Oh noes! I have forgotten to update my site for NaNoWriMo!
What is NaNoWriMo, you might ask? Well, basically it’s a sort of competition in which writers are challenged to get a 50,000 word novel written in the span of a month.
As for the “competition” part of it, well, anybody and everybody can win, so long as we meet the word count requirement. See, we’re not competing against each other, we’re competing against ourselves… against our own time, stamina, commitment, and whatever reasons we might have that could interfere with the ability to write that much in that span of time.
That’s not to say we can’t compete against other writers. There are word wars and various challenges to see how well we compare to our writing buddies, other regions, and so on… if we choose to participate in these other things.
One of these days I might give one of these other things a try.
Now, despite the name, you don’t actually have to write a novel for NaNo. No, you can write poetry, non-fiction, a series of short stories, and so on. Novels just happen to be the most common projects for a word count like that.
Over the years, I’ve written a Sonic the Hedgehog fanfiction (2010), a group of Doctor Who fanfics (2012), a pirate novel that I’ve rebelled on and worked on for multiple NaNos running (2011, 2013, 2014, 2015).
And this year, despite the fact that that pirate novel seriously needs finishing, I’m working on a group of Legends of Tomorrow/The Flash fanfics focused around my favorite villain-turned-antihero, Captain Cold.
I’ve won every single year by meeting the word count requirements… but only a few projects have ever been completed. Notably the Sonic fic and a few of the short fics in the Doctor Who group.
My project for this year is summarized on the site as such:
“Leonard Snart (Captain Cold) is discovered to have ties to the League of Assassins. What those ties are, nobody knows; even Snart with his eidetic memory can’t remember who Majummed is, or why the name terrifies him so… and pressuring him to find out has some fairly nasty results that disturb even the infamous Ra’s al Ghul.”
Incidentally, this is also the description for one of the fics in the set, though this particular fic has not (yet) been written.
You can read the ones that have been written on my deviantArt or on fanfiction.net, if you so choose.
And my word count is as follows:
Day 1: 3614 words
Day 2: 3127 (total 6741)
Day 3: 2975 (total 9716)
Day 4: 3308 (total 13,024)
I’m trying to manage a “reverse NaNo” this time around, just to do things differently; my daily count might not be exactly what I need, but it looks like I’m in good shape for it!
